The physical effects of age-related macular degeneration can only be seen by looking closely at the retina – the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. In order to see the retina an ophthalmologist must use special equipment (e.g. OCT, fluorescein angiography) to shine light onto the retina and examine any abnormalities.
View our AMD vision simulator to see how vision is affected by macular degeneration. The simulator shows how the world might look to someone who has AMD.
